Here’s 47+ Years Of Brutally Honest Business Advice In 6 Minutes

April 2 2025 . Stuart Thomson

I was stuck.

I had built a legal practice I was proud of, worked tirelessly, and served my clients well. But despite all my efforts, growth had hit a wall. The harder I worked, the more I felt like I was running in circles.

Something was missing, but I couldn’t see what.

I’ve spent 27 years working with business owners across the public and private sectors. I’ve seen some breakthroughs and built thriving businesses. While others stay stuck. Struggling year after year.

At first, I thought it was skill, strategy, and money.

But the real difference I’ve noticed is something else entirely…

Your business success is as strong as your network

I know what you’re thinking.

“I don’t have time to network.”

I’ve been there. Running your own business is tough. I was working long hours every day. My to-do list was never-ending. I thought I didn’t have timeto meet other business owners. My clients needed me. My team needed me.

I already had so much on my plate.

It wasn’t until I hit rock bottom. I had cancelled my friend’s dinner because I had to finish client work. It was 9 pm at night. I was stuck in my own empty office. My team had left for the day. Friends were having dinner without me.

I knew something had to change.

So, I started to intentionally block time in my calendar to meet other business owners, everything changed.

  • Opportunities came.
  • Client referrals increased.
  • I got access to knowledge.

But most importantly, I found I wasn’t alone. I found people who could relate to my problems, share their stories, and celebrate the wins with me.

That’s why I’m excited that I recently launched the Good Business Network (GBN).

It’s a community of entrepreneurs who are building profitable, impactful businesses. Within the GBN you will get personalised insights, in-person events, and opportunities to connect with like-minded people.

Your relationships are what get you through the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.

“Not having enough time”is never an excuse.

The more people you know in business, the more they can help you.

Investing in your relationships pays time dividends.

Community is your most powerful sales tool

I have been to over 100+ business events (maybe even +1000) throughout my lifetime.

Early in my career as a lawyer, I knew I needed to build a network. So I started joining business groups. But one after another, they left me frustrated.

Some were just endless discussions with no clear purpose. People talking in circles, but no action. Others felt like a nonstop sales pitch. And then there were groups where no one seemed serious about growth. They showed up but weren’t truly invested.

I almost gave up on the idea of business communities altogether. It felt like a waste of time.

But when I joined the Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI), things were different.

It wasn’t just another “networking”event.

It was a space where real entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and decision makers collaborated across Asia-Pacific.

Now, as the President of CACCI, I get excited when I see real connections happen. The handshake at the annual CACCI Conference turns into private emails, phone calls, and in-person meetings a few months later.

When you have community, you unlock opportunities.

It drives your business forward in tough times.

Having a mentor is the biggest asset you’ll have

If there’s one thing you get from this article, it’s this.

Get a mentor or a business coach.

Mentors have changed my entire business trajectory.

When I started as a young entrepreneur, I thought I knew everything. And that led to a lot of costly mistakes.

I made costly mistakes that could have been avoided. I focused too much on trying to serve my clients, I forgot about marketing my own business. I rushed decisions because I thought I knew better. This kept me stuck for years.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

Find someone who has walked the path you’re walking. They’ve made all the mistakes, had the failures, and overcome the challenges.

To me, that mentor was my father.

But a mentor doesn’t have to be a family member. A mentor can be a friend, business partner, or coach. But you must put yourself in situations where you can meet those people. They won’t show up at your doorstep.

You have to seek them out.

Having a mentor can shortcut your way to business success. They’ve gone through trial and error, so you don’t have to.

The biggest cost in your business isn’t money.

It’s time wasted figuring things out alone.

Save yourself the stress.

We can help each other…

The biggest mistake I’ve seen founders make is thinking they can do it alone.

You don’t have to struggle year after year, making the same mistakes. You don’t have to sit in an empty office at 9pm (or later) wondering if this is what success is supposed to feel like.

There’s a better way.

Every thriving business I’ve seen is built on strong relationships, community, and mentorship.

This is the vision of the Good Business Network.

It’s a community designed for serious entrepreneurs who want to scale their business sustainably. It’s more than just corporate “networking”.

It’s real conversations, real support and real opportunities.

I wouldn’t be here writing this to you, if it weren’t for the relationships in my life.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. You just need to make the commitment.

And it’s as simple as signing up to the newsletter here.

Business is better when you build it with others.
